Big Book, Fast Read

At just under 700 pages, Roberto Bolano’s The Savage Detectives is not a short book.  But it moves with a wonderful high-velocity energy.  The poets and waitresses, college students and sexual explorers are keeping me excited and amused…and make me remember some of the beautiful fireworks of my college life.

Boy Scouts

It seems to me that the Boy Scouts are simply writhing in agony about their stated intent to review their policy concerning gay people.  The forecast seemed to be pointing to the time-honored strategy of merely punting the whole thing to the local organizations.  This would have accomplished nothing more than shifting the blame for the phobia against gay people from the national to the local level.  Now, they have put off the whole thing until spring.

Rachel

I no longer need to miss my daily dose of smart.  I get the podcast of Rachel Maddow’s show and can enjoy some rare intelligence and analysis by Rachel and her guests with my coffee in the morning.
